March 16 - July 14, 2024
Dive into the realm of the renowned Marina Abramović, showcased in the largest retrospective ever held in the Netherlands! Over 60 significant pieces offer insight into the evolution of her remarkable body of work spanning five decades. Explore her early creations from Yugoslavia and Amsterdam, witness groundbreaking collaborations with Ulay, and experience her enduring solo performances. Marina Abramović rose to prominence in the 1970s as a trailblasing figure in the realms of performance and body art, heralded as one of the pioneering founders of this avant-garde art form. Renowned for pushing boundaries, she elevated performance art from its experimental origins to mainstream recognition. Using her own body as a canvas, Abramović continuously challenges the thresholds of both physical and mental endurance. Her collaboration with her partner, Ulay, whom she encountered in Amsterdam in 1975, propelled her to global acclaim through their enduring and boundary-pushing performances. Together, they embarked on transformative journeys, testing the very limits of their beings. In her subsequent solo endeavors, Abramović delves deeper into themes of spirituality and human interaction. Her work transcends mere observation, inviting audiences to become active participants, fostering a shared energy that blurs the lines between artist and viewer. Performances within the exhibition run daily from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. Re-enactments, executed by performers rigorously trained in the Abramović Method, occur intermittently throughout the day. These re-enactments, at times spanning several hours or even days, are conducted without a fixed schedule, ensuring that visitors encounter a performance regardless of the time of their visit.
