Flower Power: Spring and Wellbeing in Amsterdam

Spring is just around the corner, bringing the prospect of shiny skies, colourful flowers, and the general joie de vivre that the season brings to Amsterdam and the world.

After the long, dark winter, spring brings welcome relief, infusing daily life with feelings of renewal and rejuvenation. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Amsterdam’s parks and nature spots, with the leaves returning to the trees and the city’s residents heading out on refreshing walks.

If you’re from a bigger and busier city like New York, London or Saõ Paulo, the Dutch capital can provide a breath of fresh air and a chance to clear your head. To make it even easier, we’re excited to offer our own Ultimate Wellness Weekender, packed full of opportunities to soak in the Dutch spring.

To get you in the mood for the season, in this blog, we’re going to take a look at how making the most of the Amsterdam spring in bloom can do wonders for your mental wellbeing.

The great outdoors

The brilliant energy that spring brings to the table offers up the perfect opportunity to venture out into the sunshine and wash away those wintertime blues. Humans are social creatures and we enjoy sharing the charms of spring and summer with one another. There are few cities in the world that provide a better playground for this seasonal socialising than the outdoor offerings of Amsterdam.

Heading out on a tour of the city on its enchanting canal network is a superb place to start. As well as becoming part of the ebullient tapestry of Amsterdam in the spring, you can soak in the thriving energy of the city with your family and friends without having to deal with the busy bustle of the pavements and roads.

You could also embrace one of the Netherlands’ favourite outdoor pursuits and take to the streets on a bicycle. Cycling in the spring brings an undeniable boost to mental health, and Amsterdam has a cherished love for cycling as one of the world’s most bike friendly cities, nowhere more so than in its elegant parks.

Amsterdam and its parks

Speaking of parks, one of the best things about the Dutch capital in spring is its cornucopia of green spaces. The largest and most well-known is the prestigious and genuinely wonderful Vondelpark. Featuring 47 hectares of elegantly manicured gardens, pretty water features and colourful cafés, Vondelpark is a superb choice for anyone wanting to give their mental health a boost. If you time it carefully, you can enjoy some beautiful floral displays here with areas sporting all kinds of different flowers in the early months of spring. Running routes and gentle walking trails also make getting that exercise fix a breeze.

Amstelpark is also well worth your time, with animal enclosures, hidden gardens and sculptures all scattered across its charming green spaces. Be sure to visit the famous Japanese Garden and the labyrinth during your time here.

If you’re happy to head outside the city, the resplendent Keukenhof Gardens hosts one of the most magnificent tulip collections in the world, with various sections hosting kaleidoscopic colours of the Netherlands’ most famous flower.

The Akasha Summit

Here at the Conservatorium we host one of Amsterdam’s finest wellness centres: Akasha Holistic Wellbeing. Our spa offers a multitude of ways to relax and rewind, letting you step back out into spring with a new positive energy.

We also host the Akasha Summit, an intimate, annual event that sees panels of experts in wellbeing and mindfulness come together to host seminars and lectures on selected topics. The theme is on ‘a modern vision on wellbeing’ with a focus on teaching the benefits of four different tools that can help you discover your potential, including breathwork, brain functions, understanding of the heart and the family system.
